چکیده

The round goby (Neogobius melanostomus Pallas 1811) is a non-native species in the Gulf of Gdańsk. The aim of this article is to assess the absolute fecundity and attempt to describe the gonad development cycle of round goby specimens from the Gulf of Gdańsk. The stages of gonad development were classified according to the modified Nikolski (1963) scale for perciformes, which was adapted for the round goby. The sex ratio (female to male) in the population was 3:5. Spawning was most intense during April and July, and there was a pause in June. Fish body size determined fecundity. 1 Corresponding author: [email protected] ISSN 1730-413X Received: Accepted: June 14, 2006

Fatty acids and fat soluble vitamins content of Black Sea round goby (Neogobius melanostomus, Pallas, 1814) during fishing seasons

The aim of the present study was to determine and compare the seasonal changes in the proximate composition, fatty acids profile and fat soluble vitamins content in spring and autumn goby (Neogobius melanostomus) caught from the Bulgarian Black Sea waters. The proximate composition (moisture, protein and total lipid) has been determined according to AOAC (1990).  Analysis of fatty acid methyl e...

First record of round goby, Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas, 1814) in the Sava River, Croatia

In June 2011, 34 specimens of round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) were caught at three different locations in the Sava River in Croatia, which is a first record of this invasive species in Danube tributaries in Croatia. Size, structure and condition of populations indicate that the species is well adjusted to its new habitat and that further range expansions are highly likely.

Evidence for ontogenetically and morphologically distinct alternative reproductive tactics in the invasive Round Goby Neogobius melanostomus

Alternative reproductive tactics are characterized by the occurrence of discrete alternative morphs that differ in behavioural, morphological and physiological traits within the same sex. Although much effort has been made to describe the behaviour, morphology and physiology of such alternative morphs, less effort has been invested investigating how much overlap there is in the characteristics ...

Gorging on gobies: beneficial effects of alien prey on a threatened vertebrate

Invasive species often have rapid and far-reaching negative impacts on populations and ecological communities. These effects are most common when invasive species have few competitors or predators. Although higher level carnivores do consume invasive species, quantitative effects of new and abundant food sources on predators have rarely been documented and, as a consequence, potentially positiv...

Indications of competition between non-indigenous round goby and native flounder in the Baltic Sea

The Ponto-Caspian round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) was introduced to the Gulf of Gdańsk, southern Baltic Sea, in the late 1980s, and it has now become the dominant demersal fish species in shallow water. This study aimed to assess diet preferences and the degree of diet overlap between the round goby and the native flounder (Platichthys flesus). Results from time-series of stomach contents a...
